Environment refers to all of the natural materials around us like air, water, land, etc. in which people, animals, and plants live. Pollution means contamination of this environment. Human beings, animals, plants, air, water, and soil are the main elements of the environment. Our environment is polluted mainly in two ways — air pollution and water pollution. Air is polluted in many ways. Smoke from mills, factories, and vehicles- like buses, trucks, etc cause air pollution. Serious air pollution especially occurs in big cities and big industrial areas. Water is also polluted by chemical fertilizers and insecticides used in the land. Mills and factories pollute water by throwing the waste materials into the rivers and canals. Unsanitary latrines in the countryside standing on the banks of the rivers and canals also pollute water.  Thus air and water are polluted. Accordingly, our environment gets polluted. Every year millions of people all over the world die as a result of this pollution. Air pollution causes pneumonia, bronchitis and other respiratory diseases.  Water pollution causes cholera, diarrhoea, etc. We should realize that both air and water are important for living. They are also called life.  So, we should take determined action for keeping the environment free from pollution. We can also create public awareness against all types of pollution.
