The main causes of traffic jams are violation of traffic rules, huge number of rickshaws on the roads, more vehicles than road capacity, unplanned roads, etc. Besides, illegal parking, unsafe driving, the narrowness of roads, unauthorized roadside shops and hawkers cause traffic jam. Heavy traffic jam occurs during the peak hour. Traffic jam is a great problem in our life. Many passengers waste their valuable time on the road that makes them late for work. Wastage of fuel on the road causes air pollution. Emergency vehicles like fire-trucks, ambulances, police officers cannot reach their destination in time. This can bring danger to our life and property. We can get rid of these problems by taking some measures. Narrow roads should be widened. We should close road side car parking and build some alternative routes, bypass roads and one-way movement of vehicles, etc. to reduce traffic jams. Government should also take strict steps to minimize traffic jams and make our life secure on the roads.

Traffic jam refers to a kind of situation on a road when vehicles are fully stopped or move very slowly for periods of time. It is a common picture in cities and towns of Bangladesh. It has become especially intolerable in Dhaka city. Nowadays in the communication system, it is one of the major problems. There are several causes behind traffic jam. The main causes of traffic jam are the rapid growth of population, increasing number of vehicles on the road than the capacity, want of sufficient spacious road, want of traffic polices and frequent violation of traffic laws. Moreover, shortage of flyovers, lack of alternative routes, presence of hawkers and pedestrians indiscriminately on the road, haphazard stopping and parking are also responsible for traffic jams. Traffic jam has a negative impact on our life and economy. Office going people, businessmen fail to reach their working places in time. Students often cannot attend their classes. The most tragic impact of traffic jams is that ambulances carrying critical patients often die on the way without treatment. Passengers have to waste their valuable time on the road. Consequently, they delay in employment, meetings, education, business, disciplinary action or personal affairs. Traffic jams can be solved by adopting some measures. Road infrastructure should be developed in the city. Spacious roads, bypass roads and one-way movement of vehicles, flyovers, etc can reduce traffic jams. Government should create strict rules for the drivers and take a long term step for traffic management on the road.
