COVID 19 refers to Coronavirus Disease 2019 where ‘CO’ stands for corona, ‘VI’ stands for virus, and ‘D’ for disease. It is an infectious disease caused by a newly discovered virus named SARS-CoV-2. This virus is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic. A pneumonia outbreak was first reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019 which was traced to this Coronavirus. This virus seems to be transmitted rapidly mainly via respiratory droplets when people sneeze, cough, or exhale. When human body gets infected the virus attacks the epithelial cells of the respiratory tract. Gradually it causes colds with most common symptoms, such as fever, and a sore throat, loss of taste or smell, headache, pain etc. In some cases it shows serious symptoms like difficulty in breathing, chest pain, loss of speech or movement etc. Medical attention is necessary in case of serious symptoms. To prevent infection and to slow down transmission of COVID-19 we should wash our hands regularly with soap and water or with alcohol-based hand rub frequently. Also we should cover our mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Use of mouth musk is recommended by WHO. There have been at least 24 lac people’s deaths confirmed because of COVID-19 pandemic in world wide. COVID 19 vaccine is being given now to provide acquired immunity against the virus causing coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID 19). We should all be aware of this disease to keep our health free from COVID-19.

COVID 19 is a short form of Coronavirus disease 2019. It is caused by a newly discovered virus. This disease was first identified in human body in Wuhan City, China, in December 2019. It gradually spreads all over the world within a few days and became an ongoing pandemic. It has already taken the lives of 24 lakh people in the world. COVID-19 spreads through droplets generated by infected person coughs, sneezes or touching. The most common symptoms of COVID 19 are colds, fever, dry cough, and headache, loss of taste or smell and tiredness. In some cases it may cause serious symptoms such as difficulty in breathing, chest pain or pressure and loss of speech or movement. The symptoms can take up to 14 days. In case of minor symptoms, one should stay home and self-isolate. Older people are victimized seriously. Medical attention is necessary in case of serious symptoms. We can prevent COVID 19 by wearing a mask, cleaning our hands and keeping safe distance. Also we should avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from large groups of people. COVID‑19 vaccine is now available in many countries. We should take vaccine to increase immunity against the virus causing COVID‑19.
