Durga Puja is the most important festival in the Bengali calendar for the Hindu community. It is celebrated in the Bengali month Arshin and the English month October. Durga Puja is believed to commemorate the victory of goddess Durga over her demon adversary Mahishasura. The festival is celebrated by Hindus by lighting oil lamps and praying to the goddess Durga.  Durga Puja is celebrated in several countries of the Indian subcontinent and the world, including India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. The most important celebrations take place in the states of West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand, and Assam of India. Each state has its own unique traditions and rituals associated with the puja. Usually, Sharadiya Durga Puja is held from the sixth to the tenth day of Shukla Paksha of Ashwin Bengali month. These five days are known as “Durgasashthi”, “Durgasaptami”, “Mahasthami”, “Mahanvami” and “Vijayadashami” respectively. Vijayadashami is a great festival celebration. This celebration includes the last idols in the procession of clay idols of Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, Ganesha, and Kartika. They are immersed in water along with the music and chants associated with deep worship. During the Durga puja, all the Hindu community of the country visits the Durga temple and offer their prayer to the Goddess. Special food and prasad is served in worship. At this time, special police forces were appointed for the security of the temple.

Durga Puja is a traditional festival centered around the worship of Goddess Durga. Durga is the one who protects from demons, disturbances, diseases, sins, and fear of enemies. Durga Puja is celebrated in several countries of the Indian subcontinent and the world, including India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. But due to being the main festival of Hindus, Durga Puja is celebrated with great pomp in the Indian states of West Bengal, Assam, Tripura, and Jharkhand, and in Bangladesh. Durga Mahapuja is performed in Shukla Paksha of Ashwin or Chaitra Bengali month. Ashwin Navratri Puja is known as Autumn Puja and Spring Navratri Puja is known as Basantik Durga Puja. The most commonly seen idol of Goddess Durga is the Family Durga idol. In the center of this statue are Goddess Durga Singhavahini and Mahishasuramardini; a small face of Siva above her crown, goddess Lakshmi above and Ganesha below right; Above left is Goddess Saraswati, and below is Kartikeya.
