Introduction:

A newspaper is a publication containing text and image based information about current events of home and abroad.It covers a wide variety of fields such as politics, business, education, sports and art, weather forecasts, reviews, notice, advertisement, etc. It is like a window through which we can see the whole world. Nowadays it has become a part and parcel in our day to day life. Without newspaper, we cannot do a single day.
History :
Newspaper was first published in England in 1628. In India, the first newspaper was Hicky’s Bengal Gazette printed in 1780. Other newspapers such as The India Gazette, The Calcutta Gazette, The Madras Courier, and The Bombay Herald published soon. ‘The Samachar Darpan’ was the first Bengali weekly newspaper published by the Baptist Missionary Society in 1818. Recently, publishing technology has been developed. Therefore, thousands of newspapers are being printed daily all over the world.

Types of newspaper:
Newspapers are of various types. We can learn different types of news by reading different types of newspapers. They are sold daily, weekly, monthly, and even quarterly to its readers. All these papers except the daily are known as periodicals and magazines Again, there are different types of newspaper depending on the size of circulation. They are national dailies, metropolitan dailies, suburban and small-town dailies. There are some newspapers characterized by size. They are a broad sheet, narrow web broadsheet, and tabloid. In our country, there are many English and Bengali dailies. They are The Ittefaq, The Protom Alo, The Jugantar, The Observer, etc.

Usefulness:
Newspaper is a source of earning knowledge. We can learn about politics, economics, culture, literature, games and sports of the whole worlds by reading newspaper. Businessman, politicians can collect national as well as international information and affairs from it. Government can supply important news to the public. People also can express their opinions and grievances through newspaper. Students learn many educative articles by reading newspaper. Advertisements for goods in the newspaper also play an important role to the readers.

Demerits:

Sometimes, some newspapers publish false or partisan news. Once Napoleon Bonaparte said, ‘Four hostile newspapers are more to be feared than a thousand bayonets.” Such type of newspaper creates confusion in the public mind or excites public feelings.

Conclusion:
Newspapers are very useful to us. We cannot even think of our own life without newspaper. Every citizen of a country should read newspaper daily.
