Story of an honest woodcutter

Once there lived a woodcutter. He was very poor but honest. He lived on the bank of a river near a jungle. He used to cut wood in the jungle. By doing this hard task he earned very little and somehow maintained his family. One day he went to the jungle to cut wood. While he was cutting wood, all on a sudden the axe falls into the river. The river was very deep. The woodcutter tried his best to find out his axe but failed. This axe was the only means of his livelihood. The woodcutter was too poor to buy another axe. So he became much grieved and began to weep bitterly like a child. His bitter cry draws the attention of the water goddess. She rose up from the water and asked the woodcutter, “Why are you weeping, good man?”  The woodcutter told her of his missing axe in the river water. The goddess took pity on him. So she dived into the water and brought a golden axe. She asked him, “Is that your axe?” As he was honest, he replied, “No.” Then the goddess dived again into the water and brought a silver axe. She again asked the same question again. The woodcutter replied, “No.” And at last, the goddess dived again and brought the real axe of the woodcutter. This time she also asked, “Is this your axe?” “Yes”, replied the woodcutter with joy mood. His joys knew know bound to find his axe. The water goddess surprised to see his honesty. She became very happy and gave him all the three axe as the gift of his honesty.




Moral of this story of an honest woodcutter : Honesty is the best policy.
